AUBURN — Teacher Alan Elze is set to present the last program in this year’s collaboration between LA Senior College and the Auburn Public Library at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, in the Androscoggin Room at the49 Spring St. library.
This Senior College in the Community program, Executive Order 9066, will cover how in 1942, 127,000 Japanese Americans, many of whom were American citizens, were incarcerated. Their crime? Living on the West Coast, according to a news release from Susan Brown, public relations at the college.
They were incarcerated in internment camps (read concentration camps) in desolate areas of the U.S. They were held because they looked different from the majority of Americans. Very few German-Americans and Italian-Americans were held, as they didn’t stand out. How it happened, and the results, will be discussed.
Elze has taught extensively at Senior College since 2005, teaching more than 75 classes on a wide variety of subjects.
