FARMINGTON — A balanced offense helped University of Maine at Farmington survive a low-scoring battle for a 47-39 victory over Fisher College in women’s basketball action at Dearborn Gymnasium on Friday night.
Jaycie Stevens scored a team-high 10 points for the Beavers (1-2), who had six different players score at least six points, including Lisbon native Rosalie White.
Naomi Mares poured in a game-high 18 points for the Falcons (1-3).
CMCC 101, GREAT BAY CC 23: The Mustangs (8-0, 2-0) outscored the Herons (0-1, 0-1) by a 58-5 mark in the second half to roll to a Yankee Small College Conference win in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
WPI 67, UMF 46: The No. 8 nationally ranked Engineers (3-0) were paced by 15 points apiece from Andrew Lufkin and John Lowther as they pulled away from the Beavers (1-1) in Worcester, Massachusetts.
Terion Moss scored a team-high 14 points for University of Maine at Farmington, and Kyle Donlin added 13. Worcester Polytechnic Institute led 35-19 at half before the Beavers drew within 10 with just under eight minutes to play.
WOMEN’S HOCKEY
PROVIDENCE 3, MAINE 0: Rachel Weiss scored a pair of goals, and Sandra Abstreiter stopped all 42 shots she faced as the 13th-ranked Friars (11-4-1, 8-3-1 Hockey East) blanked the Black Bears (8-8, 6-5) in Providence, Rhode Island.
Sara Hjalmarsson opened the scoring 3:11 into the second period.
Brooklyn Oakes made 29 saves for Maine.
MEN’S HOCKEY
BOWDOIN 5, WILLIAMS 3: James Cerepak and Chris Brown got the tying and go-ahead goals just 48 seconds apart late in the second period as the Polar Bears won their season opener against the Ephs in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
Nate Clark and Albert Washco also scored for Bowdoin, which earned former University of Maine assistant and Maine Mariners head coach Ben Guite his first win at the helm of the Polar Bears program. Brown added an empty-net goal in the final minute.
Alex Kozic made 29 saves for the Polar Bears.
