BETHEL — Young pianists from around the world are studying and performing at Gould Academy from July 1 to 19 during Music Without Borders, an international piano festival directed by Georgian-Russian pianist and teacher, Dr. Tamara Poddubnaya. The festival is in its fifth year.

Recitals typically include works by Brahms, Rachmaninov, Beethoven, Mozart and Liszt. Public performances will take place throughout the festival at 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday in Trustees Auditorium in the McLaughlin Science Center on the Gould campus. Recitals are free and are general admission. Seating is limited.

A distinguished graduate of St. Petersburg’s Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory,  Poddubnaya established herself as one of Russia’s foremost keyboard artists and piano teachers. She frequently serves on juries at international piano competitions teaching and performing in Russia, the Netherlands and in the United States, where she is professor of piano at the Long Island Conservatory and visiting professor at the Portland Conservatory of Music. Several alumni of past festivals have returned for this season: Evgeny Genchev of Bulagaria, 22, who just completed his third year of study at London’s Royal Academy of Music; Dimitar “Mitko” Dimitrov of Bulgaria, 23, now pursuing graduate study in Amsterdam; and Veselin “Vesko” Ninov of Bulgaria, 20, a student of Poddubnaya at the Long Island Conservatory and recent prize-winner in competitions in Canada and the United States.

Also returning is Farshad Tahvildar-Zadeh, a recent graduate of Princeton High School in New Jersey. Since last year’s festival, Farshad has been performing and winning prizes in competitions in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He will study at Oberlin Conservatory in the fall. Kevin Chen, 12, a prizewinner in competitions in Massachusetts and New Hampshire during this past year, and George Kiu, 8, will return this season.

Attending their first Music Without Borders are Ilya Ischenko from Buzuluk, Orenburg Province, Russia, and Christian Sanders and Elvire Boelee from the Netherlands. These three students are prizewinners in European competitions and have studied with Poddubnaya at the Prins Claus Conservatorium in Groningen, the Netherlands.
