Years ago, I wrote a letter to the editor about LifeFlight helicopters flying over our house at all hours of the day and night (“A life-saving service,” Aug. 1, 2015).

We live on the top of Oak Hill in South Monmouth, which is equidistant from the Lewiston Central Maine Medical Center helipad and the highway junctions of 95 and 295 in Gardiner.

Having flown over the area myself, I recognize that our mountain retreat is an excellent visual reference point when LOM (LifeFlight of Maine) has to respond to any given emergency in that area.

I offered to “leave a light on” for them.

LOM has recently requested permission to fly at lower flight levels during inclement weather, and public hearings have been held.  I presume the opposition consists of homeowners who don’t like the noise.

Any of us can become an accident victim, and I bet no one in the back of that helo questions the pilot’s judgement about the safest way to get to the hospital. The rest of us need to be tolerant when that noisy helicopter flies over.

I’m grateful for the life-saving service this fine team provides — day and night — and so should everyone.
