AUBURN – A COVID-19 outbreak among staff and residents at Schooner Estates, a senior living community, is under control, an administrator said Tuesday.
The Stetson Road complex has more than 100 senior independent-living units, as well as assisted living, residential and memory care units totaling more than 150 beds.
The outbreak began July 8 when a staff member tested positive for COVID, according to Diane Day, the director of finance and human resources. Three residents and one staff member tested positive within the following week that could be directly tied to the initial case.
In total, four staff members and four residents have tested positive, Day said. The staff cases were confined to one department and the resident cases shared communal areas, including one of the three dining rooms on the campus.
There have been no hospitalizations related to the outbreak and no new cases in the past four or five days. The communal dining areas and activities were shut down over the past two weekends as a precaution, Day said, but reopened Monday morning.
The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Monday that it had opened an outbreak investigation at Schooner Estates. An investigation at a congregate care facility is triggered when there are five or more cases among residents and/or staff within 14 days, according to Maine CDC guidelines.
