BASKETBALL

Cooper Flagg of Newport recorded 10 points, 17 rebounds, eight steals and four blocked shots as the United States won the U17 Basketball World Cup on Sunday with a 79-67 victory over Spain in Malaga, Spain.

It’s the sixth straight U17 World Cup title for the U.S., which trailed until the third quarter, when the Americans outscored Spain 29-13 to erase a 38-33 halftime deficit.

Flagg, the youngest player on the U.S. roster, was chosen to the all-tournament team.

BASEBALL

NECBL: Bryce Afthim and Brady Afthim combined on a four-hitter, and David Bermudez singled home Calvin Hewett in the eighth inning to give the Sanford Mainers a 1-0 win over the Danbury Westerners at Goodall Park.

Bryce Afthim allowed three hits and no walks while striking out five over six innings. His younger brother closed it out with three innings of one-hit relief, also recording five strikeouts and no walks.

GOLF

PGA/EUROPEAN TOURS: Xander Schauffele picked up his fourth win in the last 12 months, overcoming a rough patch in the middle of his round with two key birdies and a par save for an even-par 70 to win the Scottish Open.

It was the first time the PGA Tour co-sanctioned a European tour event.

Schauffele finished at 7-under 273, one shot ahead of Kurt Kitayama (66), who earned one of three available spots for this week’s British Open at St. Andrews, Scotland.

• Trey Mullinax won the rain-delayed Barbasol Championship for his first PGA Tour title, holing a 15-foot putt from the edge of the 18th green to beat Kevin Streelman by a stroke in Nicholasville, Kentucky.

Mullinax played 33 holes Sunday at Keene Trace, competing a 5-under 67 in the delayed third round and following with a 66 to finish at 25-under 263.

Streelman’s hope of forcing a playoff ended when his 9-foot birdie putt rolled right. He settled for par and a 67.

Mullinax earned the last spot in the British Open at St. Andrews.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Jerry Kelly won the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship for the second time in three years, breaking away with two late birdies to beat defending champion Steve Stricker by two strokes in Akron, Ohio.

Kelly closed with a 2-under 68, taking the outright lead with a 15-foot birdie putt from the fringe on the par-5 16th and running in a 10-footer on the par-4 17th. He finished at 11-under 269 on Firestone’s South Course.

Stricker matched Kelly with a closing 68.

AMERICAN CENTURY CHAMPIONSHIP: Tony Romo won the celebrity event for the third time, beating former pitcher Mike Mulder and NHL player Joe Pavelski with a 5-foot birdie putt on the second hole of a playoff in Stateline, Nevada

Romo also birdied the par-5 18th in regulation to earn three points and match Mulder and Pavelski with 62 points at Edgewood Tahoe in the modified Stableford scoring system event.

Romo, the former Dallas quarterback and current top NFL television analyst, also won at Edgewood Tahoe in 2018 and 2019.

Mulder won three straight times from 2015-17.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE: Charles Leclerc revived his title challenge by holding on to win the Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg, Austria, for a third victory of the season, while Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz’s hopes of a second-place finish ended when his engine blew as he was about to attack Max Verstappen’s Red Bull.

Leclerc held on to beat Verstappen by 1.5 seconds.

Lewis Hamilton finished third for Mercedes and encouragingly gained a third straight podium place.

CYCLING

TOUR DE FRANCE: A solo attack by Bob Jungels gave him his first Tour de France stage victory on the first Alpine finish of this year’s race, while two-time defending champion Tadej Pogačar retained the leader’s yellow jersey after the ninth stage.

The 29-year-old Jungels set off on his own with almost 40 miles remaining in the mountainous 120-mile route from Aigle in Switzerland to the ski resort of Châtel les Portes du Soleil in France.

The Luxembourg native had time to sit up and stretch out his arms before punching the air in delight as he crossed the line 22 seconds ahead of Jonathan Castroviejo.

HOCKEY

NHL: All-Star forward Adrian Kempe agreed to a four-year, $22 million contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings.

The club announced the deal with Kempe, who set career highs with 35 goals and 54 points in 2021-22 while earning his first All-Star Game selection.

SOCCER

MLS: D.C. United defender Brad Smith will have surgery to repair a torn left ACL and will miss the rest of the season.

The 28-year-old Australian was injured during Friday’s 7-0 loss at Philadelphia. He entered the match as a 42nd-minute substitute and came out in the 67th.
