BANGOR — The Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor is cutting jobs as a way to save money.

Hospital President Deborah Carey Johnson wouldn’t say how many jobs are being cut.

But the nurses union says 14 nursing jobs are being targeted.

Some of the areas affected by the job cuts at the 400-bed hospital include obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, patient care administration and the hospital’s printing operation. Johnson says the cuts will not affect patient care.

Johnson tells the Bangor Daily News administrators hope to find new positions for any employees displaced from their current jobs.

Chief Financial Officer Mer Doucette says the number of people seeking hospital services without insurance and can’t pay their bills is increasing. Doucette also cited the weak economy and more outpatient treatment.
