The subheading of a March 17 article in the Sun Journal stated, “Former U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin ignores request for 11 debates before June 14 with Caratunk’s Liz Caruso.”
I wonder why? Debates provide valuable information to the voters. Candidates exchange views and visions, and lay out how they will battle for what they believe.
To build voter confidence in their ability as a future legislator, we need to see and hear the candidates exchange their opinions. Money and past proven records are good, as cited by Poliquin’s spokesperson, but an unwillingness to engage in current issues is disconcerting.
The world is changing rapidly. We need leaders who can respond and go after current issues. One way is voicing who candidates are and what they will do.
I heard Liz Caruso speak at the Androscoggin County GOP caucus. Her beliefs are strong, and she is able to articulate issues of great concern with conviction.
There is power in the spoken word. This is an opportunity to make each contender stronger and more grounded in sharing their positions before the people of Maine.
I would appreciate the opportunity to hear Bruce Poliquin in debates with Liz Caruso, and I hope he will reconsider her invitation.
