50 Years Ago: 1972
Guests from Boy Scout Troop 111 presented a demonstration at the Monday afternoon meeting of the Girl Scout Troop 285 held at the library of Washburn School. Richard Hines and Danny Lothrop, skilled in tying knots, showed the girls how to tie three knots for the requirements of a badge they have been working for. The opening ceremony was presented by the sixth graders and leaders who were present who included Mrs. James Betsch, Mrs. David Sjostrom and Mrs. Erlon Reed. It was announced there will be no business meeting for the troop, but instead there will be a roller skating party.
25 Years Ago: 1997
Author Lynn Plourde will be autographing her new book, “Pigs in the Mud in the Middle of the Rud” on Saturday, March 8, at Apple Valley Books in Winthrop from 1 to 2:30 p.m. She will read the book beginning at 1:30 and inviting children to participate in the reading: Free posters for the book also will be available. Plourde, a Winthrop resident, works as a speech-language therapist in Winthrop Grade School, She also is the author of 10 instructional books for teachers. Her picture book was published by Scholastic Books and illustrated by Caldecott Award winner John Schoenherr was chosen as a Junior Library Guild selection and recently received a starred review in School Library Journal.
