Duplicate bridge

OXFORD — Oxford Hills Duplicate Bridge Club met May 6. A 5 table Howell movement was enjoyed.

Finishing first in flight A were Rosemarie Goodwin (Lewiston) and Luke Merry (New Gloucester) with a 78% game. Second were Nancy Farmer (Norway) and Marta Clements (Woodstock). Third were Pat and Mike Quinn (Otisfield).

Finishing tied for first and second in flight B were Carol Curran (Bridgton) and Barbara Vanderzanden (Waterford) and Hank Sakrison (Poland) and Denny Raymond (Waterford) who also were first in flight C. Third in B were Priscilla Rooth (Brunswick) and Hazel Glazier (Norway). Second in C were Jim Krainin (Windham) and Milt McKeen (Bridgton).

Men cooking

OTISFIELD — The men of the East Otisfield Free Baptist Church will be busy on Saturday, May 14, getting ready for a roast pork loin dinner which will be served from 5 to 6:30 that evening in the fellowship room of the church at 231 Rayville Road. Chef Peter Rogers will be in charge in the kitchen. In addition to roast pork, the men will serve baked potatoes, minted carrots, green peas, salads, homemade desserts, and coffee, juice, and tea.

Rummage sale

NORWAY — There will be a rummage sale by the Youth Ministry of St. Catherine’s Church from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 14, in the parish hall at 32 Paris St. There will be a good selection of summer clothing and white elephant items will be available. The money earned will be used for retreats and charities for young people.

Boxberry School

OXFORD — The Boxberry School invites the public to visit from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 14, at 301 Webber Brook Road.

Learn more about the independent elementary school and unique learning environment. Meet teachers, parents and students while observing classroom settings during an in-session school day. PARIS — A spring sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. May 14, at Deering Memorial United Methodist Church, South Paris. There will be a rummage, baked goods and RADA cutlery.

Italian feast

HEBRON — Hebron Community Baptist Church on Hebron Station Road will host an Italian feast from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14, to benefit Little Field Home in Malawi, Africa. The cost is $7 for adults, $3.50 for children ages 6-12, and free for children under 6.

Legion dances

PARIS — Jones Dance Band will play at Legion Hall on Church Street, South Paris, on Saturdays, May 14, 21, and 28 from 7-10 p.m. The cost for adults will be $5 and a lunch counter will be open.

Swingin’ Bears

PARIS — The Swingin’ Bears Square Dance Club will hold a dance from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the Oxford Hills Middle School, Pine Street, South Paris. All square dancers are invited to join in the fun.

The charge is $6 per person. Non-dancers are invited to watch at no charge. The caller for the square dancing is Ray Hilton who will be calling Mainstream and Plus. The round dance cuer is Carol Stewart. There will be refreshments at intermission, pot ‘o gold drawing and door prizes. Hosts/hostess will be Bob and Eleanor Herrick and Erland and Esther Tucker.

Church sale

SUMNER — The Congregational Church of East Sumner will host its 2nd annual plant/yard/bake sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 14.

Plants are mostly perennial flowers from local gardens with annuals and vegetable seedlings also for sale. Yard sale items and baked goods will be offered. Everything will be under the shelter of the new pavilion in the church lot so weather is not a problem. All proceeds will benefit the work of the church. FMI Linda Glass at 388-2263.

Ethnic buffet

WEST PARIS — A public buffet supper, featuring Finnish, American and other ethnic foods, will be held at the Finnish-American Heritage Center, 8 Maple St, on Saturday, May 14, starting at 5 p.m. The cost if $7 for adults and $3.50 for children. This is sponsored by the Finnish-American Heritage Society of Maine.

Spring concert

BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Community Band will perform its spring concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at the West Parish Congregational Church.

The band, directed by Patricia Boyle-Wight, is preparing for the summer, with Memorial Day parades, Mollyockett Day parade July 16, music at Waterford’s celebration July 31, and end of the summer concert Monday, Aug. 15, at 7 p.m. at Gould Academy Bingham Hall.

The band rehearses on Monday nights at 7 p.m. at the West Parish Congregational Church. New members are always welcome.

Universalist service

PARIS — Marilyn Hammond will lead the 10 a.m. service Sunday, May 15, at the First Universalist Church, 36 Pine St., South Paris. Forest Perkins will direct the music and Renee Wales will lead the Sunday School. The Coffee Hour will follow in Good Cheer Hall. All are welcome.

Fairground clean-up

WATERFORD — The spring clean-up at the Waterford World’s Fairground will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 15. All the grounds need to be raked and the buildings need to be swept and cleaned. Bring a rake or paint brush or broom, whatever you would like to do. At noon hamburgers, hot dogs and a drink will be served. If you would like to bring something to share it will be most appreciated. The fairgrounds is located at 36 Green Road, North Waterford. Finnish group

WEST PARIS — The regular monthly meeting of the Finnish-American Heritage Center will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at 8 Maple St. Following a brief business meeting Tooty Wilson will provide a program on the Kantele (a Finnish instrument). A coffee social will close out the day. The public is invited to attend.

Chocolate Chip Day

PARIS — National Chocolate Chip Day will be celebrated  Monday, May 16, at the Paris Public Library. Play Chocolate Chip Bingo with real chocolate chips, and snack on chocolate chip cookies and milk after listening to a short nonfiction picture book about where chocolate comes from and how its processed. Even though elementary schools in SAD 17 will not be in session, this special event will still be held at 4. All ages welcome. Contact the Paris Public Library for further information.

Christian Women

Pajama Storytime

NORWAY — The Norway Memorial Library Children’s Department will be offering a pajama storytime program from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 18. Pajama storytime is for children ages 2-5 and will feature bedtime stories and lullabies to prepare your child for a good night’s sleep. Children may wear their pajamas, bring a favorite stuffed animal, and if you would like bring a blanket to lie under while Ms. Anna (also in her pajamas) reads stories.

Potluck

WATERFORD — The Wilkins Community House will hold its monthly community potluck supper at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 19. All are welcome.

The Community House is located in Waterford Flat on Plummer Hill Road behind the village green next door to the church. The hosts for this supper are Martha Eaton, Sara Stockwell and Steve and Bonney Edwards. This will be the last supper until the Fall. Bring a friend and a dish to share.

Japan benefit

BETHEL — Telstar High School Student Council is holding a dance-a-thon on Friday, May 20, for the benefit of those affected by the earthquake in Japan.

Dunham benefit

SUMNER — A benefit supper for the Dunham family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Hartford Sumner Elementary School Cafeteria. Entry will be by donations only.
