Senior citizens

WOODSTOCK — The Bethel Senior Citizens Club will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the Cross Stone Restaurant located next to the Mollyockett Motel on Route 26. The Yankee pot roast meal will cost $10. Reservations must be made before 10 a.m. on May 6 by calling Caroline Gould at 824-3226 or Arlene Lowell at 824-2877.

Nancy Willard will lead members in stretching exercises at 10:30 a.m. for those interested. Gerry Shimamura will speak about hospice care.

Military families

RUMFORD — American Legion Auxiliary Unit 24 is having a supper to honor military families. We honor our military service men and women and sometimes forget that the families left behind go unnoticed.

The supper will be on Saturday, May 14. Social hour is from 5 to 6. Supper will be served at 6. Cash bar is available. It is a sit down meal and will consist of pork roast, potatoes and gravy, vegetable and roll. We will also offer a vegetarian meal if requested. Dessert will follow.

There is no charge for this meal. All area military families are welcome to attend. We ask that everyone who plans to attend to please call Tricia at 357-3289. This is important so we are sure there is a seat for those who would like to attend and to be sure we have prepared enough food for everyone. Please RSVP by May 9.

Historical society

PERU — The Peru Historical Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at the Peru Historical Society Building.

Driver course

RUMFORD — Rumford Community Home will sponsor an AARP driver safety course from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at 11 JFK Lane. The cost is $10 and must be paid in advance.

Class of 1955

MEXICO — The Stephens High School Class of 1955 will meet at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, at the Far East Restaurant for their monthly luncheon meeting.

Salway at library

BRYANT POND — Norma Salway of Bethel will be the presenter at the Whitman Memorial Library at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 12. Salway is a retired teacher of SAD 44 and will be sharing her book, “The Spirit of Songo.” This is a collection of poems and vintage photos celebrating the life of Songo Pond. The program is open to the public at no charge and light refreshments will be served.

Science event

ORONO — The 2011 Citizen Science Symposium will be held at the University of Maine on Thursday, May 12 and Friday, May 13. The primary objective of the symposium is to share information about environmental citizen science, where volunteers assist scientists in monitoring and data collection.

The two day event will conclude with three field trips, including a vernal pool community-monitoring demonstration at the University Forests and a GET WET! (Groundwater Education Through Water Evaluation and Testing) presentation.

Sno-Goers dinner

ANDOVER — Snow Valley Sno-Goers will hold a dinner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at the clubhouse off Route 5. Menu includes baked beans, casseroles, hot dogs and homemade dessert. Adults, $7; children 12 and under, $5; 3 and under, free.

Park clean-up

CANTON — Volunteers are needed to clean up flower beds and for general clean up at Heritage Park on Saturday, May 14. Meet at the park at 9 a.m. Please bring tools. The rain date will be May 21.

Rummage, food sale

RUMFORD — St. Barnabas Church will hold a rummage and food sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 14.

Yard sale

RUMFORD — The Rumford United Methodist Church will hold its 3rd annual Spring Fling indoor yard sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 14, at the Fellowship Hall, 455 Linnell St.

The “bag for a buck” tables will be back this year. Although there will be no clothing for sale, there will be a table for curtains, linens and yard goods.

There will be a  bake table, and coffee, tea and muffins will be available for purchase throughout the morning for refreshment.

The Plant Pavilion is expected to be well stocked.

Turkey dinner

RUMFORD — A turkey dinner with all the fixings will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, May 15, at the Rumford Grange, Route 2. Adults will cost $8 and children under 12 will cost $4.
