FARMINGTON — A Rhode Island prison official and a Massachusetts man each has pleaded not guilty to a charge of misdemeanor criminal trespass through their lawyer, Woody Hanstein.

The men allegedly went into a Rangeley condo and taking wine glasses in February.

Rangeley police initially issued court summonses to Robert Vitale, 48, of Foster, R.I., and William Kessler, 49, of Athol, Mass., on charges of felony burglary and misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking last month.

After reviewing the case, the Franklin County District Attorney’s Office reduced the charges to one count each of misdemeanor criminal trespass, Rangeley police Chief Dennis Leahy said.

Hanstein entered the not guilty pleas in writing earlier this month, according to court records. The two had been scheduled to appear in Franklin County Superior Court on Friday. Both have requested jury trials, Hanstein said Friday.

Vitale is listed as a deputy warden at a medium-security state prison in Cranston, R.I.
