John Myrand walks down the new storybook trail Thursday at Thorncraig Bird Sanctuary in Lewiston, looking for blowdowns to clear from the trail. Myrand is a volunteer steward, a position he was recruited for eight years ago when he was recovering from knee surgery and doing small hikes every day at the sanctuary on the advice of his doctor. Myrand is a former long distance hiker, who has section hiked all of the Maine and New Hampshire Appalachian Trail, and has done hiking trips to Greece. Now, at age 70, he prefers more gentle terrain, and wants to preserve his body for hiking long into his future. Andree Kehn/Sun Journal Buy this Photo
