50 Years Ago: 1973
Cattle rustlers are riding again in Auburn but an effort to “cut ’em off at the pass” hasn’t worked yet. Police reported Tuesday that an eight-month-old Holstein calf was stolen from a barn owned by George Fields of the West Hardscrabble Road. Detective Walter Hall said the animal is valued at $250 and weighed about 300 pounds. There have been three such cattle rustling cases in Auburn this summer, apparently another result of the beef shortage. The theft apparently occurred about Aug.10 but was not reported previously because the owner believed the animal had fled out of the barn and was wandering in fields.

Jay Town Manager Cornell F. Knight was hired Monday night to be the town manager of Winthrop. He will begin there Sept. 15.
