SOUTH PARIS – Mildred A. Merrill, 89, passed away on Monday Aug. 14, 2023, at the Market Square nursing home. Born Dec. 13, 1933, in Waterford, to Alfred and Margaret (Clough) Merrill. She was educated in Bethel Maine and graduated from Gould Academy in 1951. Shortly after graduating she married the love of her life Neil Merrill in 1953 and started their family in Bethel. She was employed at Gould Academy as a secretary to the Headmaster for several years.
Her and Neil enjoyed time with friends and traveling. The most memorable trip was going to Alaska and back hauling their camper. After Neil’s passing, she connected with an old schoolmate, Rodney Harrington. They spent the last 20 years as companions making more memories, traveling and enjoying each other’s company.
Alberta was very involved in her community. She enjoyed being involved in Maine Adaptive Skiing, the Bethel Rec Board especially setting up the skating rink in the winter, and hosting Gould Academy Alumni get-togethers with her classmates. She also enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, watching sports, making wedding cakes and snowmobiling.
She was predeceased by her parents Alfred and Margaret Merrill, brother Charles Merrill, brother Dwight Merrill, husband Neil Merrill, companion Rodney Harrington, son Greg Merrill, and an infant son James.
She is survived by her granddaughters, Karissa Singleton and her husband Cole of Martinez Georgia, Kianna Merrill of Augusta Georgia, and Elizabeth Merrill of Oxford. Brother Emerson Merrill and his wife Loretta of Bethel; a sister June Staples and her husband Roscoe of Raleigh, North Carolina. Daughter-in-law Sue Smith and her companion David Hettler of Port Orange, Florida. Great-grandchildren Kaylynn, Christian, Keaton, Ivy, Kane, and Charlee Rose. Along with several very special nieces, and nephews.
The family would like to say a special thank you to the caring staff at Stephens Memorial Hospital and Androscoggin Home Healthcare and Hospice. And a very heartfelt thank you to Kelley and Heather on the Memory Care Unit at Market Square. You all helped make this final journey as comfortable as possible.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday Aug. 20, 2023 from 2-4 p.m., at the Bethel Alliance Church, Rte. 26, Bethel. A funeral service will take place on Monday Aug. 21, 2023 at 11 a.m. In keeping with Mildred’s wishes, the burial will be private. Arrangements are under the care of Oxford Hills Funeral Services.
