100 Years Ago: 1923
The new million dollar interstate memorial bridge at Portsmouth will be opened to traffic this afternoon, Governor Fred H. Brown announced this morning as he left for that city with Adjutant General Howard, Senator George H. Moses, First Assistant Postmaster General John H. Bartlett, and Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt. Governor Baxter of Maine will be present.
50 Years Ago: 1973
A Block Party is scheduled to be held Saturday evening on Knox Street, between Spruce and Birch Streets. Primarily for residents of the block, the event will include live music and other entertainment, and a light supper. The party is co-sponsored by Rap Place and Trinity Episcopal Church, and will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Police have agreed to close Knox Street to traffic in the area and Rap Place has announced that anyone wishing to sing or play an instrument at the event should contact them at 145 Park St. If this block party is a success, Rap Place intends to organize more of them.
25 Years Ago: 1998
Jay Town Manager Cornell F. Knight was hired Monday night to be the town manager of Winthrop. He will begin there Sept. 15.
