AUBURN — The annual McGuckian Cup races for sailors ages 13 and younger occurred at Taylor Pond Yacht Club in Auburn where teams of two sail Turnabout boats over a seven-race series.

Lack of wind on July 31 postponed any racing until Aug. 1, when a shifty west-northwest breeze challenged the 14 sailors, according to a news release from Mike Horn of Auburn, the sailing program director.

Ellena Frumiento, Simon Hall and Emma Frumiento, the race committee of sailing instructors, set the course, moved marks, facilitated boat rotations and started races.

Maverick Choiniere of Auburn and Florence Dowle of Minot fouled at the start but won the first race. Radley Papo of Auburn and Audriana Bornales of Lewiston claimed second.

Oto Macri of Cambridge, Massachusetts, and John McGillicuddy of Lisbon had the lead in race two, but then Choiniere and Dowle gained the second win. Macri and McGillicuddy picked up a win in the fourth race.

Lilly Ward of Greene and Rafa Hargreaves of Auburn won the third, sixth and seventh races. Korban Wolfe and Carter Hedges, both of Auburn, won the fifth race. The final race never happened as Ward and Hargreaves scored an easy win to claim the McGuckian Cup title.

Based on in-race observation and post-race inspection of boats, Audrey Mileikis of Auburn, as a skipper, and McGillicuddy, as crew, were honored for their seamanship.
