100 Years Ago: 1923
No trace of Alfred Merlan, Jr., and Gaston Dallendsch, who have been lost on the side of Mt. Katahdin since the forenoon of Wednesday, of last week, had been found up to 10 o’clock Tuesday morning. In view of the weather conditions which have prevailed in the intervening days, the fact that the two young men are understood to have had no food supply with them, and were very thinly clad, experienced woodsmen are beginning to lose all hope that the boys will be found alive.
50 Years Ago: 1973
The long quest to construct an implantable artificial heart, drawing steadily closer to realization, raises a disturbing number of questions, a panel of scientists has warned the government. Some of the moral, ethical, legal and social questions have the potential for emotion-charged controversy. The scientists said these issues should be resolved before the artificial organ is made available to the estimated 50,000 people whose lives might be saved each year.
25 Years Ago: 1998
“Buffalo Bob” Smith, the cowboy-suited host of “The Howdy Doody Show ” who delighted the baby boom generation in the early years of television, died Thursday of cancer. He was 80.
