Bates College has a new director of men’s golf, and it’s a name many golf fans in Maine know well.
The school announced Friday that Shawn Warren has taken on the role, replacing Lewiston grad Brendon Croteau, who led the Bobcats the past two years.
“It is indeed a pleasure to officially welcome Shawn Warren as the director of men’s golf here at Bates,” Bates College Director of Athletics Jason Fein said in a press release announcing the hire. “Shawn brings with him a wealth of success in the sport of golf, and will provide an influential knowledge and passion to a team that has experienced a tremendous amount of positive momentum as of late. We look forward to the 2023-24 campaign as Shawn primes the Bobcats to compete at the highest level of athletics and academics.”
Warren is a five-time New England PGA Player of the Year and as an amateur won the Maine Open in 2004 and the Maine Amateur in 2006. The 2003 Windham High School graduate, who is now a PGA Class A professional, has qualified for the PGA Championship three times (2018, 202, 2022).
“I am beyond grateful to be joining the Bates family,” Warren said in the press release. “The opportunity to lead a collegiate golf program is something for which I am incredibly thankful. A top priority of mine is to build a highly engaged team that shares my commitment to blending the education and athletic opportunities that Bates College provides.”
Warren inherits a program that is coming off its best-ever showing at the NESCAC Championship (tied for fourth) this spring, which was hosted by Martindale in Auburn.
