100 Years Ago: 1923
Alcohol contained in 80 tin cans and valued at $1,500 was seized by Deputy Sheriffs Leveque, Maloney and Dobbins of Sheriff Murray’s liquor squad, on the South River road, Auburn, Tuesday night. The sheriff had been on the lookout for this lot of liquor which is said to have been brought over the road from Lynn. Mass. Tuesday night the deputies found the alcohol in thick bushes about fifteen feet from the highway near the old Dingley farm.
50 Years Ago: 1973
Eagle Scout Michael Lord of Troop 648 in Brunswick, sponsored by St. John’s Church, has been selected as a staff member of the Boy Scout National Jamboree to be held at Moraine State Park near Pittsburg, Pa., in August. National Jamborees are held every four years to enable Scouts from all over the country to come together in fellowship and brotherhood, and to display skills and exchange ideas.
25 Years Ago: 1998
Cheverus High School, Maine’s only all-male Catholic high school, may be going coed. In an effort to boost enrollment and income, the school hopes to begin accepting girls for the first time in its 80-year history, its president said. “For the most efficient use of faculty and resources, to break even and to offer good programs, this direction becomes necessary to just pay the bills,” the Rev. John Keegan said Thursday. Enrollment now stands at 390, but Keegan hopes to boost that number to between 600 and 900.
