Maine’ boys hockey coaches proposed a power-ranking formula to determine the Super 8 teams, which is identical to the one used by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association.
The power rankings are based on three factors:
• Win/tie points — 5 points for each win, 2.5 points for each tie.
• Schedule points — the winning percentage of each opponent on a team’s schedule multiplied by 5, combined with the winning percentage of that team’s opponents’ opponents. The formula to calculate this factor is 2/3(opponent’s win %*5) + 1/3(opponents’ opponents win %*5)
• Bonus points — the winning percentage of the opponents a team defeated multiplied by 12, and the winning percentage of the opponents the team tied multiplied 6.
The power ranking is determined by dividing the sum of the win points, tie points, schedule points and bonus points by the number of games played.
