NEW GLOUCESTER — Bystanders were thanked for helping a driver whose car went off the turnpike and crashed Wednesday, New Gloucester Fire and Rescue wrote in a news statement.
Interim Deputy Chief Hale Fitzgerald said the crash occurred near mile marker 73.
Bystanders helped fire and rescue crews remove the driver from a Chrysler Sebring, which was found well of the road, he said. The driver was taken by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston for injuries not considered life threatening.
“We would like to thank the bystanders who stopped to aid the occupant of the vehicle,” Fitzgerald wrote in the statement. “Oftentimes individuals call 911, report an emergency, and continue on their way. Taking a few minutes, if one is able to, and safely stopping to check on a potential emergency is an exceptional act of kindness.”
The name of the driver was not released because the department is not authorized to do so.
Maine State Police investigated the crash, Fitzgerald said.
On Monday, the department responded to a collision involving a Buick Encore and a U.S. Postal Service vehicle on Route 26 near Brackett Road, Fitzgerald said in an earlier release. The Buick overturned, trapping the driver inside. Once freed, the person was taken by ambulance to Maine Medical Center in Portland for injuries not considered life threatening .
Poland Rescue crews treated and released the driver of the postal service vehicle.
Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office investigated the crash, Fitzgerald said.
Attempts to reach the office for more information, including the names of those involved, were not immediately returned Wednesday.
