100 Years Ago: 1923
Harry Vaughan of Arcadia street, Lewiston, proved a regular “movie hero” Tuesday afternoon when he rushed out of his house, seeing an automobile running down the hill driverless, with several children in the rear seat, and stopped the car. Vaughan did not understand the working of the machine but stuck to it until he found the brake and halted the moving car.
50 Years Ago: 1973
A Rockland man has been fined $25 for watching television while driving on Union Street. Police said Frank A. Hallowell, 59, had a battery operated television set on the hood of his car. He was charged in District Court here with “unlawfully having within view a television broadcast while operating a motor vehicle.”
25 Years Ago: 1998
Utility crews who traveled to Maine to help the state recover from January’s massive ice storms have been invited back to enjoy some sun and some lobsters. At least 1,200 workers and their families from as far away as Texas and Florida plan to converge in Augusta on July 24 for a huge state-sponsored lunch across from the State House. In addition to free lobster, hot dogs or other picnic fare, participants will get discounts at some Maine hotels, restaurants, campgrounds and other attractions. They’ll also get a free state park pass.
