14 year old Stellar Leber of 21 First Street, Auburn, attempted to take her bath Saturday night. She proceeded in the usual manner but for some reason or other the gas heater failed to function properly. Within a few moments the house was filled with gas and Miss Leber was overcome. All doors to the Leber home had been locked long before the first drop of water had been drawn because the girl was alone in the house at the time. Fortunately her father, Karl Leber, a butcher, returned home about this time, and finding the doors locked removed a screen and crawled In through a window. First aid measures quickly revived the girl and Sunday she appeared to be in as good health as ever.

Residents of Portland, Maine’s biggest city, will decide in November whether to ban smoking in restaurants. The Portland City Council voted 7-0 Monday night to let residents have the final say on an ordinance that prohibits smoking in Portland’s more than 200 restaurants except those that have separate, ventilated rooms for smokers. Bars would be exempt unless they are part of a restaurant. The ordinance, which also out laws self-service tobacco displays, was the first of its kind in Maine.
