Pat Murphy, 103 year old pioneer, the oldest man in Colorado and the oldest Knight of Columbus in the world, is missing. He had planned to climb Pike’s Peak, but whether he is lost on the mountain is not known. He left early Friday.
50 Years Ago: 1973
Gov. Meldrim Thomson signed into law today a bill which claims a disputed 2,400-acre lobstering area on the Maine border as New Hampshire’s marine jurisdiction 200 miles offshore. Thomson stressed he sought the law before the recent disagreement over the border with Maine was precipitated by Maine’s arrest of New Hampshire lobstermen in the contested area. However, he said the establishment of the claim will help the state in its U.S. Supreme Court suit against Maine and “future generations of New Hampshire men and women in exploring and developing the natural resources of the seabed” – such as oil. The measure provides that unless the governor and Executive Council deem it necessary, New Hampshire’s laws will not be enforced in the disputed lobstering area but “we in no way relinquish our claim” to those waters.
25 Years Ago: 1998
With the concrete poured and steel girders erected, Poland’s new high school is taking shape. A principal has been named. A dean of students will be hired soon. And, after decades of being shuttled to classes in neighboring communities, teens from Poland, Mechanic Falls and Minot will finally be able to walk the halls of their own 130,000-square foot high school.
