100 Years Ago: 1923

The fire department was called out Wednesday for a small blaze on the roof of a house at 91 Sewall street, Augusta, occupied by the family of C. A. Bachelder. The chemical from the Hartford station responded to the call, and the fire was speedily extinguished. The blaze started from a burning fire cracker.

50 Years Ago: 1973

It was a perfect week for a great musical show based on one of the most significant incidents In American history; and the Brunswick Music Theater performance of “1776” here at Bowdoin College’s theater Monday evening lived up to all advance billing. The portrayal of such prominent historical figures as John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Richard Henry Lee, John Dickinson and Edward Rutledge was projected close to perfection by the cast directed by Tom Sinclair.

25 Years Ago” 1998

Should you keep it or let it go? It’s the  dilemma for fly fishermen who have finally landed that big one. Maine guide Mike Jones is among a growing number of fishermen who advocate “catch-and-release” or “zero-limit” fishing. He says that, among other things, catch-and-release fishing has a direct impact on tourist-based businesses that depend on good fishing “We all realize this is a limited resource,” Jones said. “More and more fishermen are fishing the same waters, thus having a greater impact on those fish populations.”
