Longtime Leavitt Area High School field hockey coach Wanda Ward-MacLean died late Friday night after a battle with metastatic breast cancer.
A post on a CaringBridge.org page for Ward-MacLean announced her death Saturday morning.
According to the website’s homepage, “CaringBridge is an established non-profit designed specifically for sharing health journeys.”
In a text message to the Sun Journal, Leavitt Athletic Director Ryan LaRoche called Ward-MacLean’s death “a huge hit to the community.”
Ward-MacLean led the Leavitt field hockey program to eight state championship appearances and four state titles. According to the CaringBridge.org page set up on her behalf, Ward-MacLean compiled 399 wins. An unofficial 400th win came June 14 in a scrimmage pitting Leavitt against Lisbon at Leavitt Area High School.
Ward-MacLean was inducted into the Maine Field Hockey Association Hall of Fame on Thursday.
