BETHEL — About 10 veterans met for their annual flag burning ceremony at the Mundt-Allen 81 American Legion Hall on Vernon Street.
“Comrades, we have presented here these flags of our country which have been inspected and judged unserviceable. They have reached their present state in a proper service of tribute, memory and love” said veteran George Angevine to the group.
Richard Farren of West Bethel followed with a prayer, “And let no grave of our soldier, sailor, Marine or airman dead be unhonored and unmarked.”
After the flag ceremony, the men ate home-cooked meals served by their auxiliary.
Miss Poppy, Lily Burrill, of Albany, presented the $628.55 she earned selling all 500 of her poppies at the I.G.A. and at Steam Mill Brewers (her uncle’s restaurant). She is the granddaughter of member, John Kimball, of Albany.
On the agenda of the meeting was which members planned to attend the July 18 military funeral for Stanley Allen, whose remains were positively identified 80 years after his death at Pearl Harbor. The post is partly named for Allen.
