REGION — School is out for the summer and most public libraries in the Franklin County area will be kicking off their summer reading programs to help parents find ways to keep their children entertained for the warmer months.
The Wilton Public Library will be kicking off their summer reading program with a costume party on Wednesday, June 28, at 6 p.m. The theme of the costume party is “Things with Wings”. The library encourages guests to dress up in winged themed costumes, such as birds, butterflies, fairies, dragons, bugs, airplanes, and bats.
The library will offer music, snacks, and information on the summer reading program throughout the month of July.
Over in Jay, at the Jay-Niles Memorial Library, the summer reading program will begin on Monday, June 26, at 5 p.m. with a show from magicians Markus and Angelique Steelgrave. The event will feature animals and illusions, and good-natured audience participation is encouraged.
The Treat Memorial Library in Livermore Falls started their summer reading program on Saturday, June 17, and will continue the program on Thursday, June 22, at 6 p.m. with an activity involving snacks and paint. On Thursday, June 29, they will have a session on creative self-care with Sal the Therapy Dog in attendance.
Treat Memorial Library will also continue to offer their story time session every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.
And finally, Farmington Public Library’s summer reading program began on Thursday, June 15, with a reading contest. Children of all ages may read or listen to books in any format and earn points based on the number of pages in the book.
Prizes include a weekly raffle for used books and a coupon to Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream and the top readers earning gift certificates from Devaney, Doak and Garrett Booksellers, Narrow Gauge Cinema and Twice Told Tales. The contest will end on Tuesday, Aug. 8.
