100 Years Ago: 1923
A bootleggers’ convention has just been held here in Bangor. So far as known this is the first session of the kind to be held In the country since Congressman Volstead’s famous act became a law. Until this time the convention has escaped attention in the newspapers. No list of delegates elected was printed. Nor will be. It would be difficult to secure it. Time and place of sessions of the convention were not advertised.
50 Years Ago: 1973
The larceny of a battery from a Litchfield man’s car was reported to Lewiston police today, Robert Norton of Norton Transmission, 923 Sabattus St., Lewiston, told police shortly after 10 o’clock this morning that a battery had been stolen from a 1965 sedan owned by Leonard Foss of Litchfield which had been parked in the firm’s lot during the night.
25 Years Ago: 1998
An abandoned paper mill along the Androscoggin River is the first Maine property to make the “endangered places” list issued by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The group, which has released its list annually over the past 10 years, included the Great Bowdoin Mill as one of the 11 most endangered historic places in the United States.
