Much unfavorable comment has been heard in Auburn since the announcement that Auburn Hall and the Troy street property, consisting of stables and the old Armory, are for sale, following an order by the Auburn City Council Friday afternoon, as reported in The Sun the following morning.
The consensus of opinion, publicly expressed in the Shoe City over the week-end, is that the Council’s vote to dispose of Auburn Hall, is “exceedingly unwise.”
No one seems to oppose the proposed sale of the Troy street property, which is known to be too small for the City’s needs, and because of the stables on it, causes discomfort to near-by residents, but, Auburn Hall, they claim, is bringing in a revenue right now that exceeds what the city would get in taxes if it was owned privately.

Four Canadian fishermen had 112 more brook trout than allowed by Maine law when they were nabbed over the Memorial Day weekend in Aroostook County, officials said Tuesday. And they had plenty of room for the fish: They came to the woods equipped with a generator and freezer. Wardens called Sunday’s bust one of the biggest violations of Maine’s catch limit in recent memory.
The four men, all from Quebec, were arrested and released after paying fines of $3,735.20, said Paul Reynolds, spokesman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.
“It’s the worst fishing violation I’ve ever seen,” said Warden Scott Colter, who helped make the arrests.
The fishermen nearly wiped out two streams that serve as important breeding grounds for trout in Aroostook County, Colter said. The streams feed into the St. John River.
