AUBURN — Jeff Harmon, a former deputy chief of the Maine State Police, announced his campaign for mayor this fall.
Harmon, who has been active in the group Citizens for Sensible Growth, which has fought against a number of city initiatives to change zoning, said Auburn “needs new leadership that embraces the principles of good governance, and that unites the community.”
In the announcement, Harmon said he is “committed to being a mayor that is responsive, engaged, and accessible to the residents of Auburn,” and “will work collaboratively to foster participatory decision making, while treating everyone with dignity and respect.”
“Harmon is committed to supporting high-quality education, strong economic development, developing affordable housing for everyone, and protecting Auburn’s natural resources,” the news release states.
Harmon is a lifelong resident of Maine, settling in Auburn with his wife 34 years ago where they raised two children. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Northeastern University and dedicated 25 years to law enforcement, beginning his career with the Auburn Police Department before joining the Maine State Police and eventually becoming deputy chief.
After retiring from law enforcement, Harmon found a career in the private sector, joining a software company specializing in programs for state and local governments.
Harmon is an active member of the Auburn community, and outside politics participates in trail running and hiking, woodworking, genealogy, and officiating track and field meets.
