JAY — Spruce Mountain High School held the first senior class community service field day Tuesday morning, May 16.
“The seniors spent about two hours Tuesday morning,” Principal TJ Plourde said Friday. “This is the first one in the 11 years since I have been here.”
Plourde said he organized locations for the students to volunteer after staff members and students came to him with the idea.
The Livermore Falls Advertiser chronicled two students weeding and clearing winter refuse in front of the Jay Town Office while three more picked up leaves and other debris near the gazebo near the Livermore Falls Town Office. Another group was waiting for tools and instructions at Griffin Field [and the AYS building] in Livermore Falls. Three students were installing a new sign for the National Honor Society community garden near Spruce Mountain Middle School in Jay while larger groups were seen performing a variety of tasks at French Falls, also in Jay.
Plourde said seniors also helped remove a homeowner’s porch and cleaned buses at the bus garage. They were at the Livermore Town Office too, he added.
At the Regional School Unit 73 board of directors meeting May 11, maintenance director Ken Vining said seniors would be at the primary school in Livermore to help with spring clean up there. During winter snow plowing, a lot of dirt was pushed up on the lawn in front, he added.
“Ninety five percent of the senior class participated,” Plourde noted Friday. “Next year we hope to expand it.”
