For the first time in a Super Late Model feature this season at Oxford Plains Speedway, someone other than defending division champ Max Cookson was clutching the checkered flag in victory lane.
Calvin Rose Jr. won Sunday’s 50-lap SLM feature, breaking Cookson’s season-opening streak that included two victories in Oxford Championship Series and a 150-lap win in Pro All Stars Series action.
Rose was joined in victory lane by runner-up Kate Re and third-place finisher Mike Rowe. Cookson was just off the podium with his fourth-place finish. It was easily Rose’s best finish of the season, after showings of 27th and 16th in the first two Oxford Plains Championship Series SLM features.
Other winners from Sunday’s slate — which was pushed back a day due to rainy weather Saturday — included Nate Leavitt (Limiteds), Caleb Morris (Thunder Stocks), Tyson Jordan (Street Stocks), Jacoby Mains (Mad Bombers), Tyler Connolly (Rookies) and Larry Lizotte (Figure 8s).
ACT AT LEE
A Maine native was a surprise winner in Sunday’s New Hampshire Governor Cup 150 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, New Hampshire.
Westbrook’s Brandon Barker, driving the No. 0NH car on the American-Canadian Tour due to a late driver change, topped a podium that featured drivers from each of the northern New England states. New Hampshire’s Gabe Brown was the runner-up and Vermont’s Jason Corliss placed third.
For Barker, it was his first ACT win in his first ACT start. He has been competing on the Pro All Stars Series and Granite State Pro Stock Series this season.
A pair of New Hampshire standouts, DJ Shaw and Joey Polewarczyk Jr., rounded out the top five Sunday. New Sharon’s Dillon Moltz placed ninth in the 24-car field.
The American-Canadian Tour is scheduled to make visits to Oxford Plains Speedway on July 9 and Aug. 26.
RACING RAINED OUT
While Oxford Plains was able to move its Championship Series racing slate back a day, Wiscasset Speedway made the decision to cancel its Saturday racing card. Also, the PASS SLM race at White Mountain Motorsports Park was postponed until June 18.
The 350SMAC Super Modified series’ season opener at New London-Waterford Speedbowl in Connecticut also was rained out Saturday. The New Hampshire-based series, which features Maine racers among its driver lineup, has pushed its opener to this Saturday, and it is scheduled to visit Wiscasset on July 22 and Oxford Plains on Aug. 25
