Chase Meidroth capped a 3-for-6 night in his Double-A debut with an RBI single deep to right field in the 10th inning, giving the Portland Sea Dogs a 6-5 win over the Somerset Patriots in an Eastern League game Wednesday at Hadlock Field.

With runners at first and third and two out in the 10th, Meidroth hit a drive over the head of Patriots right fielder Jeisson Rosario.

Somerset overcame a 4-0 deficit, scoring three runs in the fifth against Sea Dogs ace Shane Drohan before getting a home run from Max Burt in the seventh inning and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Hardman in the eighth to tie the game at 5.

Portland’s Nick Yorke led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run. In the second, Alex Binelas belted a two-run homer, and Meidroth made it 4-0 with an RBI single.

Drohan, seeking his sixth win of the season, left after five innings with a 4-3 lead. He took a shutout into the fifth before allowing his first home run of the season – to Hardman.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: Inter Milan overpowered AC Milan early and held on to win the first leg of their Champions League semifinal, 2-0, leaving the Nerazzurri on the brink of a return to European soccer’s showpiece event for the first time since 2010.

Edin Džeko and Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored in the first 12 minutes to put Inter firmly in command, and the visitors could have added more in a dominant first-half performance.

The second leg is on Tuesday. The winner will face either Real Madrid or Manchester City, who drew their first leg, 1-1.

BRAZIL: Brazil will launch a national investigation into soccer match-fixing and the probe could have “international repercussions,” Justice Minister Flavio Dino said Wednesday.

The South American country’s soccer confederation said it had requested that the government open the new probe. Dino’s announcement followed the decisions by several top-flight Brazilian clubs to suspend a handful of players as part of a state investigation.

Brazil’s federal police will open a probe “due to the evidence of match-fixing in sports events, with inter-state and international repercussions,” Dino said in a statement on Twitter.

Earlier, Athletico said on its social media channels that 20-year-old left-back Pedrinho and 22-year-old midfielder Bryan Garcia had been suspended “preemptively” until the end of the investigation by prosecutors in the state of Goias.

Cruzeiro, Fluminense and America made the same decisions about 29-year-old midfielder Richard, 23-year-old defender Vitor Mendes, and 37-year-old right-back Nino Paraiba. Five soccer players were suspended by their top-flight Brazilian clubs as part of a sprawling match-fixing investigation.

U.S. SOCCER: Former defender Oguchi Onyewu was hired by the U.S. Soccer Federation as vice president of sporting, a newly created role the governing body said is not a replacement for departed men’s general manager Brian McBride.

The USSF said Onyewu will report to Matt Crocker, who starts as sporting director on Aug. 2, and will assist in the hiring of a men’s national team coach. Onyewu will work with men’s and women’s national teams at all levels and will help manage relationships with clubs and leagues.

ITALIAN OPEN: Stan Wawrinka wasted little time securing a 6-2, 6-4 win over Ilya Ivashka in the first round in Rome after the start was delayed for 90 minutes due to rain.

Wawrinka, a three-time Grand Slam champion, next faces 26th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov, with the winner potentially meeting top-ranked Novak Djokovic in the third round.

CYCLING

GIRO D’ITALIA: Overall favorite Remco Evenepoel was involved in a crash caused by a stray dog early in the rainy, 106-mile fifth stage, which was won by Kaden Groves.

On a wet and miserable day, Evenepoel also came off his bicycle a second time, but that incident was in the final three kilometers, so he didn’t lose any time in the overall standings.

The Belgian rider crashed on the right side of the road early on, along with a number of other riders, after teammate Davide Ballerini was sent sliding on the wet surface as he tried to avoid a dog that had run onto the course.
