LEWISTON — Lewiston coach Ben Fournier and junior midfielder Cody Dionne knew a four-goal lead wasn’t a sure thing in Monday’s boys lacrosse game against Mt. Ararat.

The Eagles kept pressing in the fourth quarter, but the Blue Devils kept their distance and walked off with a 13-8 win. The victory is their fourth in a row and ups their record to 4-2.

“(The Eagles) kept battling the whole way,” Fourier said. “So we knew could not just roll over and be happy with the lead. We had to keep battling, too. Our guys did great.

“On the defensive end, it was a team effort. Everybody playing as one. On the offensive end, this is one of the best passing games that we’ve had all year. We were moving the ball very well. It was very accurate, so that was very good, so nice to watch.”

Dionne led that offensive attack for Lewiston with five goals.

“He just does a great job executing what we needed to do, whether that be push the ball on transition and slow the ball down and get us possession, he is willing to do whatever needs to do to help the team win,” Fournier said. “That’s what makes Cody great.”

Blue Devils senior attacker Liam Hutchinson turned in a hat trick. Aiden St. George netted a pair of goals and also acted as the offense’s playmaker, collecting five assists. Sophomore midfielder Jackson Bement scored a pair of goals, and Eli Bigelow added a goal and an assist.

“Great passes all around, and it feels good to get a win,” Dionne said. “(Mt. Ararat’s) a good team. They can always come back (and) just play 100 percent the whole game, and so we just kept at it and we came out with a W. It was a great team win, and thanks to the boys for making some dimes today.”

Even though Lewiston led 7-4, both teams knew at halftime that the game was up grabs in the final two quarters.

The Eagles never let up, but they couldn’t keep up. Zander Kirk turned in a hat trick and Andrew Calhoun added two goals for Mt. Ararat.

“We got a lot of fight in us,” Mt. Ararat coach Mark St. John said. “My guys are physical and they are fighters. Our guys don’t give up. They stay positive and trying to work the offense and the principles that we practice each and every day.”

Lewiston goalie Brock Rancourt made 10 saves.
