POLAND — Golfers were on every hole Friday morning for opening day at Fairlawn Golf & Country Club on Empire Road.

Restaurant Manager Kolby Banker was preparing for the afternoon rush as other staff helped golfers in the pro shop.

“We have done a lot of work getting ready for today and the weather couldn’t be more perfect,” he said, as he greeted a man delivering kegs of beer.

Assistant Director of Golf Matt Ouellette was waiting to tee off with two partners.

“The course is in great shape and you couldn’t ask for a better day,” he said while taking practice swings. “The recent rain was a blessing.”

The grounds have a new state-of-the art irrigation system to ensure plenty of water during dry spells.

The 18-hole golf course opened in 1963 on a former tree farm and boasts a new and modern clubhouse, a full-service restaurant with a diverse menu, large bar and several lounges. On the second floor is another bar, tables, games, big-screen televisions and three golf simulators.

The massive outdoor covered deck offers a great vantage point to enjoy something food and beverages while watching golfers tee off on the first hole and finish on the 18th green.

Renovations began in the winter of 2021 when new owners purchased the club. The upper level was completed last summer.

With the improved course and amenities, they hope to land one of the major amateur golf tournaments in the state.

The course and clubhouse are open seven days a week, and offer overnight stays in condos.
