University of Southern Maine sophomore Zoe Barnes earned Little East Conference Women’s Track Field Athlete of the Week honors Monday after a record-setting performance over the weekend.

The Gray-New Gloucester graduate broke the program record in the discus while winning the event at the Pine Tree State Classic in Standish on Saturday. Barnes topped Jennifer Durham’s 2013 mark of 42.40 meters twice Saturday, first breaking it with a throw of 42.85 and then besting that with a new record toss of 43.99 on her final attempt.

That mark is the second-best in New England Division III this season, and it ranks 14th in the country.

Barnes also was victorious in the shot put, with a best throw of 12.97 meters. That was just shy of the program record-breaking toss of 13.02 meters that she set a week before.
