I am opposed to reducing the Lewiston Public Library’s weekly hours from 50 to 40 and closing for an additional day.

That’s a 20% cut in services to key populations in Lewiston, particularly young people doing homework, others without easy access to the internet at home, and those looking for materials in languages other than English.

The online services that will presumably still be available when the library is closed do not make up for what the physical plant of the library provides.

If Lewiston wants to be known as a city that serves all its residents and offers everyone equal access to educational and safe recreational opportunities, it will continue to support its library.
