PARIS — A head-on collision between an car and a crane sent one driver to the hospital and closed a section of state Route 26 for a couple of hours Friday morning.

Benjamin Tyan, 41, of Yarmouth was driving a 2017 Subaru Legacy south about 7 a.m. when he apparently fell asleep and his vehicle crossed the centerline, Paris police Chief Michael Dailey said.

Scott Harlow, 54, of Bethel had just turned north onto Route 26 from Phillips Road and was headed north in a 2019 Link crane owned by Bancroft Contracting Corp. of Paris. Harlow, who saw the Subaru in his lane, brought the crane to a complete stop before the collision, Dailey said.

Tyan apparently awoke and attempted to steer his vehicle back to the right, but struck the left corner of the crane before going off the road.

Harlow was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life threatening, Dailey said.

Tyan was uninjured.

Route 26 was closed, and traffic was rerouted until just before 9 a.m. while the crash was investigated and cleaned up. A Commercial Vehicle Unit from the Maine State Police was requested to respond due to the crane being involved.

No charges are expected.

The Paris Police Department was assisted by the Maine State Police, Paris Fire Department, PACE ambulance, Oxford police and Oxford Fire and Rescue.
