BRUNSWICK — Bowdoin grabbed control early on its way to a 22-9 men’s lacrosse win over Bates College on Wednesday at Whittier Field.

The Polar Bears (7-3, 3-3 NESCAC) scored 10 of the first 11 goals. Patrick Fitzgerald led all scorers with eight goals and Will Byrne netted five goals for Bowdoin.

Bobcats (1-8, 0-6 NESCAC) junior Wil Masterson, who is from York, scored four goals to reach that mark for the fourth time this season. His 17 goals so far this year surpass his career high of 16 that he achieved last year. Malcolm Klingbeil added two goals for Bates.

BOWDOIN 18, BATES 8: The Polar Bears (3-6, 1-4 NESCAC) earned their first conference win by outscoring the Bobcats (4-6, 0-5 NESCAC) 8-0 in the opening period at Garcelon Field in Lewiston.

Sophia Sudano paced Bowdoin’s offensive attack with five goals, while Colleen McAloon and Emelia Krakora each contributed three goals.

Caroline Taggart, Bates’ leading scorer, added four more goals to her season total and now has 23.
