DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Lewiston Auburn Rotary Club will hold its annual shredding service Saturday,  April 29, from 9 a.m. to noon at John F. Murphy Homes at 800 Center St. in Auburn. As people work on their taxes, this is a good time to go through files and see what can be safely eliminated, and with spring cleaning this is a great time to get rid of paper clutter.

We charge $10 for a banker size box and there is no limit to the number of boxes. The proceeds go to nonprofits in this community to help those in need. — Celeste, Auburn

ANSWER: This is great and I’m sure many readers will be happy to participate. Where to have documents shredded is a question that comes into the Sun Spots inbox quite often. Mark your calendars, everyone. You can get rid of papers and files you no longer need and do something good for your community all at the same time!

If you know any other places where shredding is happening, please let us know!

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Pleasant Street Drop-in Center still needs gloves and mittens. There are still some cold nights ahead. We could also use tote bags, toilet paper, toiletries, tarps, different sizes of batteries, pantry items, paper and plastic bags, and plastic closable containers (like Cool Whip and large yogurt containers) for food takeaway.

Leave donations at the First Universalist Church, 169 Pleasant St. in Auburn on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or send an email (above) and someone will help with pickup. Email claxtonme@roadrunner.com to coordinate.

ANSWER: Going through just one closet, corner or bureau could yield some items that you no longer need and that The Center could give to their guests. Save those containers, bags and anything else you think would be useful. If you want to check in on what the center needs on any given day, send an email to them.

Most nonprofits also have wish lists on Amazon and you can usually find the links on the organization’s website. If you’re not sure what the needs are, it’s always OK to call and ask, and of course, monetary donations are appreciated everywhere.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I was driving home Saturday from a basketball game and the roads were quite slippery. When I tried to stop at the red light, I could not and went off into the ditch. Right away a couple stopped, made sure I wasn’t hurt, and even called the tow truck for me. I couldn’t believe how nice they were. Thank you, Connie and Dean, for staying with me and driving me home. No other drivers were involved and I’m OK, the car will be repaired, and I’m very grateful you two were there to help me. – Jan, no town

ANSWER: Time and time again, I’m impressed by these letters about all the good Samaritans there are in Sun Spots Land. These are some of my favorite kinds of letters to receive.
