DEAR SUN SPOTS: I have quite a few baby spider plants to give away. I believe there’s a nonprofit that has a sale of these plants sometime in April, if I’m not mistaken. Can you verify this for me? These little plants need a home. No name, Auburn

ANSWER: The Androscoggin Hospice Thrift Store used to have a plant sale a couple times a year, but according to the “plant lady,” there is no plan in place right now to schedule an event. Perhaps there’s another organization or community members willing to take these plants off your hands and give them a good home. If readers know of a place or want one or some, let us know here at Sun Spots.

Please remember the thrift store, as you do your spring cleaning. Consider donating all those gently used items that you no longer need, such as home goods, clothing and furniture.

The Androscoggin Hospice Thrift Store accepts donations Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, go to the website for a complete list of what items they accept (https://androscoggin.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Androscoggin-Hospice-Thrift-Store.pdf) or to their Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/AndroscogginHospiceThriftStore).

DEAR SUN SPOTS: The sleeper sofa offered in the March 22 Sun Spots has been taken. Thanks for your help. — Rebecca, South Paris

ANSWER: It’s helpful when a reader who has offered a free item lets us know when the item has been taken. And in Rebecca’s original letter she was good to include her town and phone number. This is must-have information! It’s important that you let other readers know how far they would need to go for the item. Remember, Sun Spots cannot take responsibility for getting you in touch with one another.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I’m a single mom with a 5-year-old. We’re getting some good help and I have a job but I still have trouble making ends meet no matter how careful I am. I don’t have any family in the area but I have a few new friends.

The other day when I came home from work at 5:30, there were two packages by my door. I thought it was a mistake at first but my name was on the box which was full of healthy groceries — things I can’t normally afford to buy. There was also a basket wrapped in colorful paper with a bow. It held a toy for my son, and chocolate, nice soaps and a handmade shawl … I think it’s called a prayer shawl. On top of all that, I found an envelope with a sweet card of encouragement and a Walmart gift card.

I don’t know who did this — whether it was an organization in Lewiston like a church, or if it was an individual, but I want to say how much it means to me. This gesture has given me such a sense of belonging and shows that someone out there understands and cares. Whoever you are, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I will pay it forward as soon as I can.

ANSWER: Your letter warmed my heart and I’m sure it will inspire folks to be aware of others and to be kind.
