DEAR SUNSPOTS: By the Silver Spur in Mechanic Falls my spouse and I are hearing a very loud whirring machine sound. It could be a generator, HVAC in need of repair, or some kind of industrial machine.

This goes on 24/7 and runs continuously for hours then stops for about 10 minutes and starts all over again and gets louder depending on the wind direction and at night. This noise goes right through the house we live in and adversely affects our quality of life and ability to sleep.

It is not a train which goes through on occasion and does not sound the same. I have heard it on Lewiston Street in Mechanic Falls, on Route 121 in Poland to Minot, and across the river in Minot back toward Mechanic Falls, but I cannot pinpoint the origin of the noise.

Someone who has noise testing equipment and experience in this kind of thing is needed. We would appreciate anyone who can help. —

ANSWER: That sounds torturous. Are any other readers in this area hearing this noise? It is most likely coming from a local business that may have new equipment. If any readers can add information, please do, and if you own a sound level meter, here’s your chance to use it and help out the neighborhood.

In the meantime, I urge you to speak with the town office regarding this concern. They are there to help you with these kinds of issues and at the very least, need to know about it.

You may also want to get advice from a noise monitoring professional. DEAR SUN SPOTS: We have an older La-Z-Boy loveseat/sofa bed to give to someone who could use extra seating with sleeping potential. The bed is larger than a twin but smaller than a double. It is sturdy, clean, and in excellent condition. The fabric on the front of the cushions is a bit worn but could easily be repaired, using the material from the arm covers.
