CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Four Carrabassett Valley Academy (CVA) athletes and two CVA alumni have been selected to represent their home countries at the 2023 FIS Ski Cross (SX) World Junior Ski Championships in San Pellegrino, Italy from March 25th – 28th. The World Juniors is an important international benchmarking event and provide a stepping stone to higher-level international competition, like the World Cup.
CVA Head Coach, Michael Phelan, will be supporting his athletes by representing both Team USA and Team Belgium this year.
“As first year FIS athletes, at 16-17 years old, making Junior Worlds is truly an accomplishment,” said Phelan. “For the entire eligible contingent of FIS athletes at CVA to receive an invite is unheard of. I am so proud of my team, what they have accomplished so far this season, and what they will continue to accomplish as they represent their home countries at Junior Worlds.”
The following CVA athletes have been selected to represent the United States of America and Belgium at the upcoming Junior World Ski Cross Championships: Sullivan Butler Class of 2024 (USA) from Carrabassett Valley, Francois Meloni Class of 2023 (BEL) from Luxembourg, Belgium, Morgan Shute Class of 2025 (USA) from Allendale, NJ, Maggie Swain Class of 2024 (USA) from Kingfield.
They will be joined by the following CVA alumni who also made the USA Junior Worlds Team. Tyler Currier (Class of 2022) (USA) from Harleysville, PA, Eli Derrick (Class of 2020) (USA) from Harrisonburg, VA.
With these nominations, CVA women have secured two of the four available spots on the USA Women’s Team, CVA men have secured three of the six available spots on the USA men’s team, and one CVA athlete will be representing team Belgium.
