University of Maine at Farmington freshman Sam Parsell started his collegiate career off with a bang, smacking a three-run home run in the Beavers’ season-opener. That was just the start of a standout first week for Parsell, who on Monday was named the North Atlantic Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week.

In four games, the Connecticut native batted .455 (5 for 11), with a .571 on-base percentage, as well as pitching an inning of relief.

Parsell had two hits in the Beavers’ season-opening loss to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, then collected two more hits and drew a walk in a 5-4 win over the Trailblazers in the second game of the doubleheader on Saturday. In Sunday’s pair of losses to Elms College, Parsell drew a walk in the opener, and in the second game he compiled a hit, a hit-by-pitch, and on the mound he allowed one run on one hit, two walks and two strikeouts.

UMF SPLITS WITH SUNY POLY: A four-run fifth inning was too little, too late for the Beavers in the opener of a doubleheader against SUNY Poly on Monday in Auburndale, Florida.

UMaine-Farmington lost the first game 10-5 before routing the Wildcats 15-4 in the second game.

Parsell and Jacob Kateley each had a hit and an RBI in the first game, and Nate Coombs scored two runs. Mt. Blue grad Sam Wrigley pitched a scoreless inning of relief.

In the second game, the Beavers broke open a 2-2 tie with seven runs in the fifth and six in the sixth. Will Cauchon and Cal Tibbitts each produced three hits, two RBIs and three runs. They each knocked doubles and Coombs added a triple among his two hits. Oxford Hills grad Hunter LaBossiere also had two hits, as did Ryan Sargent and Danny Terhune. Ky Morris scattered three hits, two runs and a walk while striking out two in four innings.

WOMEN’S LACROSSE
BATES 15, ST. JOE’S 9: Caroline Taggart had six goals and an assist as the Bobcats (3-3) beat the Monks (3-2) in Standish.

Annie Lowenstein added four goals and an assist for Bates, while Lauren Wong and Caroline Keating each had two.

Lydia Dexter had four goals and two assists, while Bridget Collins added three goals and two assists for St. Joseph’s.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL
UMF BATS SILENCED: The University of Maine at Farmington was shut out in a pair of games Monday in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Beavers lost 10-0 to Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham, then fell 11-0 to Jefferson University. Lisbon graduate Kiley Merritt and Lewiston grad Bella Miller collected hits in the loss to FDU-Florham, as did Maddie Pike. Merritt lined another hit in the second game. Olivia Paradis and Katie Hammer also had hits.

The Beavers drop to 0-4 to start the season. They play two games each on Wednesday and Thursday to round out their trip to Myrtle Beach.
