I have followed and supported the development of the beautiful Franco-American Heritage Center at Saint Mary’s on Cedar Street in Lewiston. I have done so ever since the dedicated group of incorporators began the campaign to renovate this iconic building for the future, by protecting the culture and history.
Although there were a few name changes since the beginning of the board’s successful renovation efforts began over 20 years ago, the most recent change to rebrand the building as Riverfront Performing Arts and Events seems like Franco-American cultural repression, in my opinion.
The inspired leadership for rebuilding the identity of the former Saint Mary’s Church into a community heritage center was spearheaded by Rita Dube, who received support from Franco-American leaders and generous donors. A change of name to “Riverfront” does nothing to acknowledge the generations of Franco-Americans who built the beautiful church and the creation of a community venue with a nonprofit mission and proud purpose.
Other Maine cultural centers highlight their heritages, like the Irish Heritage Center, the Italian Heritage Center and the Jewish Cultural Arts Center. Likewise, Franco-Americans are as important in Maine’s culture and history as other heritage groups.
Lewiston’s prominent Franco-American venue should reflect pride by highlighting its identity in the building’s name.
