Maureen C. Bates

DURHAM –Maureen C. Bates, 83, passed away on Feb. 18, 2023, after a long illness. She was born on Oct. 20, 1939, in the Bronx into a large and raucous Irish family.

Maureen married Fred in 1957 and after raising three children, moved the family to Maine for a better life. She had a creative soul expressed through her life as a florist and an artist. Her adventures took her to other countries, living on a boat in the Florida Keys and rare orchid cultivation. Maureen’s exuberance and determination allowed her to live a full and rewarding life.

Maureen was predeceased by her husband Fred, her daughter Carolyn and her brother Gordon. She is survived by her daughter Kate and husband Larry of Durham, her son Fred in Oklahoma, her grandson Jeremy of Casco, her favorite cousin Rich in Florida and her best four-legged friend Rags.
