Do we — here in Maine — hold a reverence for life? Admittedly, some factions do not.
However, I believe that most in our state hold life dear. The test will be in seeing who speaks up for the most vulnerable among us: the unborn.
Whatever our collective views of abortion are (and I realize they span the range), I don’t believe residents of Maine support abortion right up to the moment of birth. The proposed legislation that Gov. Janet Mills announced would do just that: full-term abortion, late-term abortion, with the approval of a qualified medical professional.
I believe we see ourselves as compassionate. What does this proposed law say about compassion for the most vulnerable of us? Helpless babies.
If we disregard the lives of those babies, do we go down a step from respect for all life? A lot of what we’re seeing in this nation comes down to devaluing life itself.
If we are complicit in one area, does it not color the way we view all life? Do we spread disregard for the elderly? Or for school age children being bullied? Do we turn our backs on sex trafficking? Or scorn those addicted to drugs or alcohol?
People must take a stand for the preciousness of life. Vigorously oppose this law that would murder babies on the verge of being born.
