BUCKFIELD — The Select Board on Tuesday awarded a paving contract to Spencer Group Paving of Turner, the low bidder among five companies.
Spencer offered to do the work for about $810,000. The highest bid was more than $1.2 million.
The project will be split in two parts due to the available funding. East Buckfield Road will get repaired initially, with Bear Pond Road getting repaved later in the year if the second part of the project is approved by voters at the Town Meeting.
The town has $464,000 in its summer roads account, which will cover the section of East Buckfield Road, if asphalt prices do not spike, Town Manager Cameron Hinkley said.
Hinkley has included $345,338.10 in next year’s budget to repave Bear Pond Road.
Resident Peter Werwath, a former member of the road committee, suggested the town hold off on accepting the bid, believing asphalt prices are coming down. He thought the Select Board should renegotiate the bid.
The board, however thought it best to follow the recommendations of Hinkley and Road Commissioner Weldon Lucas.
In other business, the board appointed Vickie Gammon and Jessica Michaud to three-year terms on the Library Committee and Bridget Culleton to a two-year term on the Recreation Committee.
The board reluctantly accepted Werwath’s resignation from the Road Committee. He said he felt the workload was too much while also serving on the Budget Committee, which he’ll continue with.
Hinkley noted that KRT, the company conducting the property revaluation, will begin sending postcards to some property owners, informing them of the process and upcoming site visits.
